Albert William Ellis was born in Ware, Hertfordshire (Ware Q1-1900 3B:605), son of Howarth and Kezia ELLIS (née BISHOP).

1901 census...Aged 1, he was at High Street, Burwell with his father Howarth ELLIS [33] hairdresser, born Rochdale, Lancashire; his mother Kezia [29] born Burwell; brothers Joseph Howarth [6] and William [5] and sister Isabella [3] all born in Newmarket.

1911 census...Aged 11, he was at High Street, Burwell with his parents; brothers Joseph Howarth [16] cow boy and William (apprentice hairdresser), sisters Isabella Mary, Winifred Louise [6] and Constance [3] both born in Burwell; brothers James Simpson [9] and Thomas Frederick [11 months], both born in Burwell.

He was a younger brother of Joseph Howarth ELLIS who died at sea on HMS Bulwark in 1914. see here

Enlisted in the 3rd Reserve Cavalry Regiment on 15th February 1918. This was the unit which trained men for, amongst others, the 11th Hussars (The Cherrypickers). He attested for Royal Tank Corps (No.80588) at Aldershot on 11th February 1919 and transferred to the 11th Hussars (#535227) on 4th June 1919. He had given his age as 19 years 1 month when at Aldershot, a motor fitter born in Burwell, Cambs, next of kin his father in Burwell
Posted to Egypt on 11th July 1919, he died in Abbassieh. It is assumed that he died of illness. Cairo was the base for the sick and wounded for Egypt and Palestine. In the absence of a medal index card on "Ancestry" or National Archives, it is assumed he never served abroad during hostilities
